One of our distributors sent me a startling article yesterday that every parent should read. The information came from the Environmental Working Group which found 15 brands of powdered infant formula are contaminated with perchlorate, a rocket fuel component!
I don't think babies should be gulping down a rocket fuel ingredient -- do you? Apparantly, when you mix infant formula that contains perchlorate with water that's also contaminated with perchlorate, you put rocket fuel on baby's menu.
The two most contaminated brands, made from cow's milk, account for 87% of the U.S. powdered formula market. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention published a report about this perchlorate danger in the March 2009 edition of the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology....that's a fancy name for "smart guys who know bad stuff is in our water."
They say perchlorate pollution is a legacy of Cold War rocket and missile tests and that it is a potent thyroid toxin that may interfere with fetal and infant brain development.
Years of federal inaction to set limits for perchlorate in drinking water have spurred some states to create their own standards. Currently the EPA has not provided any protection for consumers. If you'd like to get involved with this important issue you can contact EWG and join their action group.
